Three-month loan deal for Gills favourite

ROBERT TAYLOR returns to Priestfield next week looking to get his career back on track and relishing a reunion with the supporters who idolised him. Gillingham have confirmed the signing of the former fans' favourite on a three-month loan with a view to a permanent move.

"This is fantastic news for everyone connected with Gillingham Football Club," said chairman Paul Scally. Taylor, who wondered where his career was going after returning last week from a month's loan with Queens Park Rangers, admitted: "I can't wait to get back playing again for Gillingham.

"I've missed Priestfield and I've missed the supporters who helped me so much. Deep down my wife knew I always wanted to go back to Gillingham and often mentioned it to me. She wasn't wrong.

"When I left Gillingham to join Manchester City I was 28 and wanted to see how far I could go. I needed to test myself at the highest level.

"Now my ambition is to get myself fully fit and start playing regularly again. I've had two operations in my calf muscles and had my gall bladder removed in another operation just before the start of the season.

"That meant I missed pre-season which was another setback. What I need more than anything right now is to train regularly and get myself fully fit.

"Andy Hessenthaler knows the situation. At the moment I'm looking no further than my loan period and sorting out my fitness."

Taylor, who is not cup-tied, could make his Gillingham comeback in Tuesday's Worthington Cup, third round home tie against Southampton when he is expected to be named in the squad.

Wolves, who paid Manchester City £1.7 million for Taylor in August last year, will be looking to recoup some of their money and could settle for a fee of around £500,00.
