Gillingham 3 Grimsby 0

Gillingham completed their third straight League 2 win after beating Grimsby 3-0 at Priestfield on Saturday.

A first half goal from Simeon Jackson set the Gills on their way, before Mark McCammon's strike after the break made it more secure, and Charlie Daniels' stunning free-kick was the icing on the cake.

Gillingham didn’t have it all their own way in the match as Grimsby showed a lot more enterprise than last week’s visitors Accrington. They came close to scoring twice in the first half, with Peter Till and Tom Newey both testing keeper Simon Royce from distance.

As the half wore on Gillingham began to dominate and the opening goal materialised on 34 minutes when John Nutter’s corner was flicked on by Dennis Oli and Jackson knocked in from close range.

Curtis Weston, on as a second half substitute, came close early on with a powerful shot which Barnes did well to save. A better save immediately after from Royce kept Gillingham’s lead intact as he held Till’s effort.

Oli came close for the Gills, with a lobbed shot that went just over - but Grimsby were within an inch of equalising when an audacious 40-yard shot from Danny North hit the underside of the bar and bounced into the safety of Royce’s hands.

After a few nervy moments for the Gills, Mark McCammon struck the second goal on 70 minutes to calm any fears of a Grimsby revival as he scored with his second attempt, after his initial shot was blocked by Barnes.

On 89 minutes, Daniels curled in a 35-yard free-kick to cap the win for Gillingham.

Gills assistant manager Scott Barrett said: “Grimsby were a good side and they had a better first half but we got the boys in at half-time and had a chat.

“We shaded it in the second half and showed what we’re all about and scored the goals that quite rightly gave us the three points.

“It was nice to score a couple of goals from the training ground as well. It’s good to see that the hard work we put in has paid dividends.

“Charlie has a special left foot. We thought Adam Miller was going to hit that free-kick and if we did then their goalkeeper did as well. It was a goal that wouldn’t look out of place at a higher level.”
