Thrilling finish in Kent Grand National

15:41, 15 March 2006

CYNTHIA HAYDEN, a relatively novice rider, steered Indoux to a thrilling victory in the Kent Grand National at Detling on Sunday.

Little Herman, ridden by the experienced Chris Gorman, and Indoux battled it out over the last two fences with Little Herman holding his lead under an extra strong ride from Gordon.

But Hayden was determined not to be beaten and just got up in the last stride to take the honours in the four mile race.

The finish was so close that both riders, on returning to the enclosure, were unsure of the result and left the winner’s spot vacant until the judge finally gave his verdict.

There were enough runners at the West Street Tickham meeting to produce some excellent races.

Veteran Peter Bull rode a double. Honourable Spider just held off the late challenge of Old Kilimichy in the Men’s Confined with just a short head separating them and then gained a much easier win in the Restricted with Selfcertified.

Both Bull’s winners are trained by his wife Susie and he was quick to give credit for the horses’ performances.

Pampered Gale, ridden by Hannah Grissell, gave a superb display of fast, accurate jumping to take the Ladies’ Confined and give owner, Dr Caroline Hargreaves, a second success in seven days.

Alison Hickman, from Northiam saddled the winner Court Award of the Open Maiden for owner Jackie Parker.

The horse was bought eight weeks previously, having originally been trained by National Hunt trainer Brendan Powell, but had shown no form over hurdles.

Court Award was well ridden by 19-year-old Jonathan Jarrett, an employee of Henrietta Knight, of Best Mate fame. Jarrett was visiting the course for the first time.

Racing this weekend is at Godstone on Sunday. The first of seven races in the Southdown and Eridge meeting is at 1.30pm.

The Tindall yard, who have not had any runners recently due to a virus, could well start the day off with a winner in the Hunt Race in Magniolia.
