Truck racing welcomed back to Brands
15:22, 19 October 2005
TRUCK racing will return to Brands Hatch next month after an absence of more than a decade.
The Kent circuit, which has always been a favourite with truck racing fans, will host the final round of the 2005 British Championship on the weekend of November 5 and 6.
MotorSport Vision boss Jonathan Palmer said: "Truck racing has always been one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport, and in its heyday here at Brands Hatch used to attract a crowd of thousands.
"It is now over a decade since they last raced here and I thought it was about time that the drivers got to come back to one of their favourite circuits and the fans got to watch the trucks at one of the country’s best spectator tracks.
Steve Horne (ERF), who is in his 20th season of British truck racing and has finished in the top three for the last six years, leads the series but only by seven points from David Jenkins (Sisu).
Among the other entries will be former European champion Richard Walker (Castrol Atkins MAN), who has been a multiple winner at Brands Hatch in the past.
Horne was at the track to help publicise the return of truck racing after 11 years and put in several quick laps in his ERF despite the wet conditions.
He said: "It’s been 10 years since I last raced around here in a truck, but this circuit still gives me a real buzz. I’m sure it’s going to be a great venue for the finale of the season."
The Class B series is led by Andrew Hardy (Ford Cargo), just ahead of Gary George (Foden) and Max Dawson (Seddon Atkins).
The sport attracts enormous crowds in Europe, with over 500,000 spectators watching the 10 rounds of the 2004 European Cup. More than 200,000 saw the biggest event of the year at the Nurburgring in Germany.
A package of race championships will support the Truck Superprix. They will include the Formula Renault UK Winter Championships, Renault Clio Cup Winter Championships, Ginetta Sportscar Winter Series and the Legends Championships.
Qualifying will start on the Saturday at 9am with the first of seven races at 12.15pm. Racing on the Sunday starts at 10am, with 10 races on the programme.
Tickets are priced at £12 per adult per day if bought in advance or £15 per adult per day on the gate. Children aged 12 and under go free. Parking and paddock access is also free.
Advance tickets will be available until midnight on Monday, October 31 by calling 0870 950 9000, or log on to www.motorsportdirect.co.uk.
