A student who branded a nightclub’s military fancy dress night disrespectful has found himself blocked from the event and his comments removed from social media.

As the nation marks Armistice Day today, Maidstone’s Source Bar is preparing to host its Duty Calls night on Friday.

The event's Facebook page says: “We want to see as many Army, Air Force and other dress ups as we can as we will be giving out combat paint and army caps all night,” and entry is £2 before midnight.

But Mark Wyatt, 19, a student from Mereworth, wrote on the Facebook page, complaining he thought it was disrespectful.

Within an hour his comment had over 30 likes, but an hour later it had been taken down and he found himself blocked from the page.

He said: “If remembering the fallen men and women who have died in conflict is epitomised by dressing up and drinking the night away in a club, then I don’t want to be a part of it.

“The Source Bar has overstepped the mark here, and I hope people come to their senses and boycott this disrespectful idea.”

This year marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War in 1945, and on Sunday crowds lined the streets to see a large Remembrance parade through Maidstone featuring current servicemen and women, veterans and schools.

The 19 year old, from Aylesford, said: “If you know someone who has died as a direct result of real life conflict you don’t mourn them and remember them by getting drunk and having a good night out in a club.”

KentOnline's sister paper the Kent Messenger has contacted Source Bar but so far it has not responded to our requests for a comment.

As of this morning, 38 people have indicated they are attending the Duty Calls night.
