A cash injection to support the arts during the Covid-19 crisis will see individuals and organisations in Kent receive emergency funding.

In all more almost £2.1 million will be distributed to support creative endeavours in the county as artists and groups - including some of our biggest venues - struggle with the impact of coronavirus.

The support package, announced today by Arts Council England, will see 182 individuals share a total of £418,627, while 78 independent organisations will receive funds totalling £1.68 million.

Last week we reported that bosses from the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury say it needs financial support order to help it recover. It will receive £34,468 from this latest intervention.

Other organisations being backed by the newly-announced funding include Maidstone Museums, the Horsebridge Arts Centre in Whitstable, and Folkestone Fringe.

Hedley Swain, area director for the south east at Arts Council England, said: "Our sector is in unprecedented times and I am very pleased that we have been able to award so many grants in Kent and beyond in such a short timeframe.

"We’re extremely grateful to our partners for helping us to get this critical funding to artists, creative practitioners, arts organisations, museums and libraries - who use their creativity to benefit communities in villages, towns and cities across the country."

The Arts Council’s Emergency Response Package is designed to help reduce the immediate pressure faced by the creative sector this summer.

In all 7,484 grants totalling £17.1 million will be awarded to individual artists and creative groups across the country.

Almost 90% of the budget for this emergency response funding came from the National Lottery.
