A property tycoon is raising money for an elderly victim who was left in hospital after an alleged axe attack last week.

Fergus Wilson is auctioning off a piece of boxing memorabilia for the 78-year-old pensioner, who was left with serious injuries following a break in at her home in Campbell Road on Sunday morning.

The piece is a signed montage of boxer Joe Calzaghe which Mr Wilson bought at a charity auction just before the World Middleweight Champion won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Mr Wilson expects it to raise at least £250, which would go directly to the victim.

He said: “I read about her ordeal in the Kent Messenger and thought, ‘my god, what is the world coming to?’

“It is absolutely ridiculous all these old people being attacked.

“I hope the money will give some comfort to her and hope she realises that there are people in the community concerned about this.

“It is happening all too frequently in Mid Kent and somebody has got to do something.”

A 17-year-old teenager was arrested following the break-in, and charged with attempted murder, robbery and possession of an axe.

He is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court next Friday.

The auction takes place at The Clive Emson Conference Centre, Kent County Showground, Maidstone at 11am on Monday.
