Bid to rid road of traffic misery
00:00, 14 February 2003
AFTER years of frustration, residents of one Maidstone's busiest roads say they have finally had enough of the heavy traffic and pollution on their doorsteps.
More than 70 people from Sheals Crescent have formed an action group to fight for traffic improvements along the town's southern approach roads after enduring years of noise and disruption from heavy good vehicles.
Sheals Crescent is a residential area with houses standing very close to the road. Lorries coming into Maidstone from Loose Road must pass down through the crescent.
Now Sheals Action has begun an official campaign to try and improve the situation. The campaign is being officially launched tomorrow (Wednesday) when the group present a petition containing 160 signatures from people living in Sheals Crescent, Postley Road, Hayle Road and College Road to Maidstone's cabinet member for planning and transportation Cllr Malcolm Robertson (Lib Dem).
Group member June Wilkins, who lives in Sheals Crescent, said: "We have all reached breaking point. For years we have been trying to get Upper Stone Street widened out and speed cameras installed but nobody listens to even the slightest request."
She added: "We have decided that small, infrequent complaints are completely ignored, so we have taken serious action this time. I know the long-term plan is for a bypass to move traffic away, but we need short-term measures too."
