A Second World War veteran was treated to a birthday surprise as he turned 100 this month.

Jack Stacey, from Harrietsham, was treated to a surprise birthday cake by staff from his home care provider as well as son John and daughter-in-law Marie.

He was a veteran of the Royal Artillery Regiment.

After the war ended, Mr Stacey went on to work for a London printer, publishing titles including The Sun and The News of the World.

He retired in 1983 and moved to Maidstone two years ago as his health worsened.

Speaking after the visit, Mr Stacey said: "I was thrilled to receive my telegram from the Queen, as well as letters from the secretary of state and my beloved Arsenal Football Club.

"I was also very touched that Bluebird Care remembered my birthday and took the time to visit me.

"As I am blind it is very important for me to have a great relationship with my carers, who help me with my personal care needs and medication."
