A hit-and-run driver left a man lying in the road in Maidstone with a fractured leg.
A BMW car struck a pedestrian, who is in his 50s, when he was crossing St Peters Street, between Pevensey Court and Scotney Gardens.
The vehicle, which is thought to be a E36 model, left the scene without stopping.
Kent Police said it is likely the car would have been badly damaged on its front nearside.
The victim was left with an open leg fracture that later required surgery and pinning. He remains in hospital and his recovery is likely to take a long time.
Members of the public stopped to help the man until emergency services arrived.
Kent Police has launched an appeal in a bid to find the driver after the crash at about 8.30pm on Thursday, March 14.
PC Greg Forde said: "This was a serious collision that has left a man with significant injuries. It is an offence to fail to stop at the scene of an accident and I'm really hopeful that someone can come forward and help us identify the driver."
