An up-and-coming boxing star has revealed he could have been in the car when a horror crash killed four men last year.

Johnny Cash, 44, Johnboy Cash, 19, Miles 'Smiler' Cash, 25, and Jack Cosgrove, 18, died after the car they were in crashed in Lenham Road, Headcorn, on October 10.

The men were on their way to watch Tyson Fury's heavyweight trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder.

Super Bantamweight boxer Dennis McCann, from Headcorn, was invited by his best friend Johnboy to come along with them to watch the fight and could have been in the car which was involved in the fatal crash.

Speaking to Frank Warren's Queensbury Promotions YouTube page, the 21-year-old revealed he was forced to turn off his phone to ignore Johnboy's pleas to join them.

He said: "That was probably the worst time of my career to be honest.

"That day he was ringing me, ringing me, ringing me, and I never answered as I was at my in-laws' having a bit of food as I was out of camp.

"I got the cab home, chilled out, and Tyson Fury was fighting the same night.

"He kept ringing me saying 'come out' and I was going to come but when I had my food I said 'no, I'm just going to chill out'. He kept ringing me so I turned my phone off.

"I watched it in the pub where I was as it was a 100-mile drive. I got a phone call that night which was horrendous to be honest with you, probably one of the worst times in my whole life.

"We've been best mates since we were about 10 years old, but knew each other since we were six - menacing round the towns, messing about, sneaking into the cinemas and pools, just being a nuisance.

"We slept in the same beds together, he came to all my fights in lockdown. We were very, very close.

"When I got married, he got married and we went on our honeymoon together. We were best, best friends. It's very hard, but I'm hopefully making him proud."

Youngster Jerry Cash, who was 15 at the time, was left fighting for his life following the crash but has since recovered from the accident.

An inquest into the four men's deaths revealed Johnny Cash was driving the Toyota Hilux when it went off the road and into a tree.

The court heard Johnny Cash was almost one-and-a-half times the legal drink drive limit.

Forensic toxicologist Nicola Ingram said he would be able to walk around fine, but not legally allowed to drive.

She said results showed Johnny Cash was likely drinking in the last couple of hours before the accident.

Dennis McCann, who is unbeaten with a 13-0 record, faces Joe Ham this tomorrow at the O2 Arena in Greenwich.
