This comes as Monsoon Accessorize in Maidstone has been stripped bare, its empty shelves clearly visible through the windows.

The fashion retailer has also been considering selling up amid financial struggles due to the nationwide lockdown.

A sign on the door reads: "All cash, sundries, food and alcohol have been removed. CCTV is in operation. Patrols are in place."

This same poster has been put up in several other outlets, including McDonald's in Week Street.

  • If neighbouring businesses remain open, share contact details with them in case they see anything suspicious.
  • Keep minimal lighting on during the night - timer switches can be useful.
  • Ensure the CCTV system is monitored and is in good working order.
  • Set up a WhatsApp group to let all staff know their obligations, who they should contact if they notice anything suspicious and what the chain of reporting is. Only certain staff should be able to access the premises in an emergency and have a clear checklist for anyone who needs to go into the store.
  • Make sure alarms are fully operational - managers should consider a mobile phone app which allows connectivity with a voice capacity so that they can talk direct to any intruder. Fogging devices can also be helpful.

  • Check walls and fences and ensure any damage is repaired and no fixings are missing or worn. Check there are no hidden areas which could be used to gain access, hide tools in or stolen items for later collection. Fill any footholds which allow climbing and be aware vehicles parked nearby can be climbed to allow access. Spiked fence toppers and anti-climb paint can help.
  • Signage should be visible, clearly displaying contact details so people can report any concerns.
  • Delivery Areas should be kept completely clear and tidy. If there are gates, secure them and fill any gaps underneath with non-flammable items to deter people from crawling under them.
  • Make sure there is no cash on the premises overnight, leave any cash registers open and clearly empty. Add a sign to confirm no cash or valuables on premises.
  • Avoid leaving any combustible materials, especially packaging, around outside.
  • Redirect mail to avoid a build-up which could be a fire hazard or show how often the premises is visited and checked.
  • Install blinds when possible or security film so people can't see through the windows. Be aware of what people may be able to see - cash, key codes etc.
  • Be aware of what people can see What can be seen by customers from inside the premises, can they see cash
