Police are warning residents to be on the look out after a distraction burglary this week.

A Maidstone woman in her 80s was targeted yesterday (Tuesday), by a bogus caller claiming the neighbour's address was flooded.

The thief claimed he needed to turn off the water supply and entered the property in Tonbridge Road.

Once inside, he told his elderly victim to turn her taps on and off while he went to the bathroom.

After he left, the woman discovered cash had been stolen from her handbag.

Chief Insp Mark Hedges said: "Maidstone residents should be alert if a tradesman visits without an appointment and suggests there is a leak or other repair that needs fixing urgently.

"Always check the identity of anyone who calls at your address and don’t be afraid to close the door and leave them waiting outside if you need to telephone to make checks.

"If you are in any doubt, you should ask the caller to leave and come back when a family member or friend can be present.

The man is described as being white, 5ft 6in tall, with a large build and dark brown hair.

He was wearing blue overalls and a flat cap.
