Two major light displays have been forced to cancel today due to extreme weather conditions.

Both Leeds Castle in Maidstone and Cobtree Manor Park in Aylesford have taken the decision after a large part of the country was hit by snow.

Following heavy snowfall last night and this morning, many schools and businesses are now closed, with people being warned to take extra care while driving.

Leeds Castle's new lights event, designed by the same team behind Christmas at Bedgebury, is currently open on select dates until New Year’s Eve.

The 2.41km trail takes visitors on an illuminated journey through the castle grounds, passing festive installations and projections.

However, this morning organisers announced on their Facebook page that they will be unable to open tonight.

They said: "The Christmas Lights at Leeds Castle has been cancelled on 12th December 2022.

"See Tickets will contact all bookers directly to re-arrange your tickets.

"We will continue to assess the impact of the recent weather conditions for the Christmas Lights at Leeds Castle trail for tomorrow evening (13th December 2022) and will make an update on the day by 2pm.

"We apologise for the inconvenience and frustration this may cause. Thank you for your understanding."

Similarly the Glow Illumination Trail at Cobtree Manor Park, along Forstal Road, has been forced to cancel.

The month-long Christmas event includes immersive and interactive experiences, as well as walkabout performers, with all of the light installations made by local and UK artists.

A statement online said: "It is with regret that due to the extreme weather conditions yesterday the Glow Illumination Trail will be closed on Monday 12th December.

"We are as disappointed as you but the safety of our guests and staff is our top priority.

"We are planning to reopen again this week, once the roads and snow clears, please keep an eye on our Facebook page and your emails for updates.

"Please rebook tickets for an alternative date (subject to availability) at your own convenience here."

A Met Office yellow weather warning for ice remains in place until 11am tomorrow.
