A council is looking to get for compensation after a sewer pipe disrupted work on a park's play area.

Maidstone Borough Council's contractor Kier Group was working on improving Mote Park in April 2018 when, having just installed a new car park, a sewer pipe burst, flooding the main entrance.

The park remained open and Southern Water spent more than a week trying to repair the burst.

Now the council claims flooding disrupted work on a new play area, the Adventure Zone and it is preparing legal action against Southern Water for the burst.

An MBC spokeswoman said: "A sewer pipe beneath the park burst while the Adventure Zone was being built. This unfortunately meant that some of the work carried out was damaged and had to be re-done, giving rise to additional costs. We obviously want to recover these costs and mitigate our losses.

"We are prepared to take legal action, however at this stage court proceedings have not commenced."

The council did not say how much it estimated the burst cost its team.

A Southern Water spokesman said: "This matter is subject to litigation and we're very limited in what we can say at this time.

"We are continuing to talk to Maidstone Borough Council and its legal team. We have always had a good relationship with MBC."

During the burst visitors were banned from the water for more than two weeks.
