POLICE have closed four lanes of the M20 after an accident involving an articulated lorry and a van.

All three lanes of the London-bound carriageway and the outside lane of the coast-bound carriageway near West Malling have been shut between junctions three and four.

The HGV, which was loaded with oranges, is lying on its side across three lanes and the central reservation.

The driver of the HGV was airlifted to hospital by Kent Air Ambulance, but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The female driver of the Mercedes lorry is being treated for shock by Kent Ambulance Trust.

The police do not yet know when the motorway will be reopened, but the Highways Agency has been notified to clear the road.
