A Yellow weather warning is in place today as rain lashes across the county.

This afternoon's rain could be accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds and hail in places.

When asked what Kent County Council's approach to flood management was, a spokeswoman said: “We clean drains on a cyclical basis which reduces the number of reactive enquiries - a more expensive method of cleaning.

“How often we clean the drains varies depending on where they are.

“Generally, roads known to flood on a frequent basis and high speed roads are cleaned every six months, while routes that provide the main connection between towns and villages are cleaned every 12 months.

“Urban and rural routes are cleaned every 18 to 24 months.

“Excessive rainfall can put the existing drainage system under immense pressure and lead to surface flooding despite regular cleaning."

The county council advises residents who see blocked drains that are causing dangerous flooding to call 03000 418181.
