A record number of walkers set out together for a 10th anniversary Pink Ribbonwalk at Leeds Castle.
The castle grounds was swathed in pink yesterday as more than 750 walkers took part in warm-ups before being started off on the 10-mile walk by EastEnders star Nina Wadia, who then joined them.
The hardier among them took on a 20-mile walk, with all of it in aid of Breast Cancer Care. Organisers hope to raise more than £250,000.
It was a special occasion for many as it also marked the 10th anniversary of Ribbonwalks.
Nina, a Breast Cancer Care supporter, said: “I have so enjoyed my first Pink Ribbonwalk at Leeds Castle. A beautiful setting and a wonderful atmosphere.
“Every 10 minutes in the UK someone hears the awful news that they have breast cancer. That’s why I have loved doing my bit for Breast Cancer Care with this 10-mile walk. Breast Cancer Care are the only specialist support charity for those with breast cancer and their families in the country.
“Well done Kent for coming out in a sea of pink today and supporting this wonderful cause.”
Among the walkers was kmfm’s Emma Adam, who said: “What a fabulous, inspiring day. It has been amazing seeing the people of Kent come out decked all in pink and taking on 10 or 20 miles to support those affected by breast cancer. I am so proud of everyone.”
Sam Rust, 42, and her friend Anne Swift, 47, from Kings Hill, took on the 20-mile route because Sam had been diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 31.
She said: “I had three young children at the time. We were living out in France and there was a bit of a language barrier so I used Breast Cancer Care’s website a lot for information. My consultant was impressed by how much I knew.”
Wendy Dribble, 51, from Maidstone added: “Breast Cancer Care has been fantastic since my diagnosis so doing this walk today was my way of saying thank you for all their support. It is also the anniversary of my mum’s death. She was just 47 when she died. My sister has also had breast cancer so it has really affected my family.”
Lucy Johnston, UK walks manager for the charity said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who walked today in Leeds Castle Pink Ribbonwalk. We are overwhelmed by the dedication and generosity of our supporters in Kent and beyond."
