An elderly pedestrian who was airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car in a town centre has died.

Dhan Bahadur Sunwar and another woman were struck in King Street, Maidstone, on August 15, but died ten weeks later on October 26.

Mr Sunwar, of Wheeler Street in the same town, was flown to Kings College in London with serious injuries following the collision and was later transferred to Maidstone hospital.

During the 79-year-old's stay he contracted sepsis and Covid-19.

Coroner Sarah Clarke opened an inquest into his death at Oakwood House, in the same town, on Monday (November 4).

She told the hearing the Nepalese-born man’s cause of death was given as aspiration pneumonia and traumatic brain injury from a road traffic collision.

The hearing was adjourned to be heard in full on February 12, 2025.

The incident happened between Church Street and Queen Anne Road at around 10.40am and resulted in access to King Street being blocked for a couple of hours.

Mr Sunwar had been crossing the road with a woman when a black Ford Focus collided with the pair.

An air ambulance landed in Mote Park and the woman, who is in her 70’s, was also taken to a local hospital for treatment to injuries.

The driver, who stopped at the scene, has been assisting police with their enquiries.

Witnesses are being sought by officers investigating the incident.

Detective Constable Jim Galbraith said: “The victim had been walking from outside Boots and in the direction of the King Street carpark when the collision happened.

“He sadly died in hospital on October 26, and we are now appealing to anyone who may have seen this incident to contact us.

“We are also asking drivers who were in this area to check any dashcams which may retain important footage.”
