Kent's fire service has described a call out to Maidstone town centre as a "false alarm".
Crews arrived in High Street at around 4.30pm on Thursday, entering Blow Garden salon.
Eyewitnesses saw smoke leaving a vent on the outside of a property, while people in neighbouring properties could also smell burning.
A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed crews were called to a "false alarm" and are now leaving the scene.
