VOLUNTEERS cleared more than 10 tonnes of junk and abandoned vehicles from a lane notorious for illegal dumping.

More than 20 people took part in the flytipping blitz on Sunday in and around St Monk's Wood on the edge of Bredhurst.

Most of the volunteers were members of Kent trial motorcycling clubs, who legally ride their bikes in the lane at weekends.

During the course of the day everything from washing machines and fridges to mattresses and tyres were removed.

In addition more than 15 vehicles were towed to either end of the narrow country lane, for collection on Monday by Kent County and Maidstone Borough Councils.

Organiser Richard Colquhoun (corr), one of seven volunteers from the Trail Riders Fellowship taking part, said the day had exceeded his expectations.

He said: "Since the closure of Pilgrims Way at Boxley flytippers have moved down to this lane to dump their junk.

"Its something that we have started doing on a regular basis as the problem gets worse and worse.

"Each time we do it we hope the clearout will bring an end to people using this site although sadly that's probably wishful thinking."
