14:30, 29 September 2015

A mystery smell is filling the streets of Maidstone.

A strong whiff of horse manure has been reported around the town centre, as well as in Barming and East Farleigh.

It's believed the smell may be the result of sewage being spread on fields outside the town.

Residents took to Twitter in the hope of tracking down the cause of the stench.

Many of the descriptions were too graphic to publish...

Business owners reported having to shut doors and windows in a bid to keep the stench out.

Last year, a similar incident was reported and ended up being identified as the result of chicken muck spread of fields in East Farleigh.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "The Environment Agency has been made aware of a smell in Maidstone. We are investigating those sites and activities in the area that we regulate to ascertain the source of the odour."
