Frustrated shoppers were stuck inside Fremlin Walk car park for more than TWO hours today.
Congestion built up inside the car park because of roadworks on St Peter's Bridge, in Maidstone.
Exit barriers were opened but drivers claimed it made no difference.
People have taken to Twitter to show their anger of being stuck inside.
Fremlin Walk reassured customers it was doing everything they can to ease the congestion.
A spokesperson said: "It's completely out of our control. People can't move.
"We're doing everything we can to work out with the contractors of the roadworks how we can control the traffic.
"It's going to impact on our reputation, something which we do not want to happen."
Craig Chisholm, from Chatham, was shopping at the centre to find a suit for a party this evening.
He was stuck in the car park for more than two hours as he tried to leave.
He said: "It was pretty grim. A lot of people had their engines on so it stank.
"People couldn't leave because of the roadworks. Every car was nose to tail.
"When I left there were no signs of it letting up."
"Security couldn't offer us any help, we just had to sit and wait. It was pretty brutal."
Kent County Council has been warning motorists about lane closures and possible delays during the gyratory works.
