Fridgehenge crops up on Upper Stone Street, Maidstone

10:00, 21 June 2015

As thousands flocked to Stonehenge for the summer solstice a similar monument was being ogled by passersby in Maidstone.

While the circle of fridges that has cropped up on the corner of Woodville Road and Upper Stone Street might not hold the same historical significance as its Salisbury Plain cousin it is certainly causing a stir.

While more than 20,000 travelled to the West Country a somewhat more modest crowd of around 20 people gathered at the white goods ring as the sun came up this morning.

Fridgehenge was erected outside The Clutter Box overnight on Friday by Kevin Wildeman and his colleague Paul Stone.

The 53-year-old owner of Extra Mile, a white goods business based above The Cutter Box second hand store, said: "I thought it would be a good idea given the solstice was coming, so I went out at 3am and built it using about 30 fridges lying around in the yard.

"It took about three hours and I had to ask Paul for help as it was quite hard work. It's fully bolted down."

He added: "I don't know when it will be taken down, it depends on what the council think.

"The first person who walked past said it was an eyesore but everyone else has been really positive."

An employee from The Clutter Box said he had no idea where the structure had come from.

He added: "Loads of people have stopped and had their pictures taken with it and apparently people were even celebrating the solstice here earlier."

Like its Wiltshire counterpart it is not entirely clear how it was created or how far the appliances were brought from.
