Roads could well be affected by falling trees, and there are likely to be delays to rail and ferry transport.

Drivers with high-sided vehicles are warned to be particularly careful on exposed routes or traversing bridges.

Short-term losses of power and other services are also possible, it warns.

Coastal areas and seafront communities are warned to to expect large waves and heavy spray.

The best advice is to stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary to travel.

The winds are expected to strike at around midnight and last till 8am tomorrow.

The winds are a result of an area of low pressure, named Storm Claudio, that has been building over France and is now moving eastwards through the English Channel bringing gale force winds. While the worst winds will be over the Channel Islands and northern France, parts of southern England may well see Southerly gales with gusts of 50-60 mph, especially over coastal areas, with a risk of isolated coastal gusts up to 70 mph.
