Work to replace gas mains in Maidstone town centre has thrown up a few historical surprises.
The project to replace old gas mains began in Maidstone High Street last March and work is due to continue well into next year.
But the work has shown contractors a glimpse of the town as it once was.
At the top of the High Street, engineers found some old foundations which show that buildings would once have stood close to what is now the Queen’s Monument.
