A week to encourage travelling into Maidstone without a car kicked off on Monday.

Maidstone Goes Green week is organised by Kent County Council and focuses on travelling into town on foot, by bike, train, bus, or using Park and Ride.

On Monday with free bike safety checks were available in Fremlin Walk and people had the chance to make an environmentally-friendly pledge to win a bike.

Initial predictions suggest some people are up for the challenge while others will take more convincing.

Jacqui Elliott, KCC’s travel planner, said: "Some of the people we spoke to said they knew about the week but would not be giving up their cars.

"Others said they had not heard about the week but said they would consider ways of finding other transport.

"Some said they already travelled by bus or walked into town."

During the next four days different forms of environmentally friendly travel will be promoted.

Tomorrow the event is focussed on car pooling, with people being encouraged to make sure they travel into the town with a full car to cut down on congestion and pollution.

And there's an extra incentive to take part. If you spot Batman and Robin travelling together in a car in the town centre, call kmfm on 01622 691056 and you'll be entered in a draw to win a bike.

On Wednesday children will launch a walk to school scheme and Thursday features bus travel.

The week culminates with In Town Without My Car Day, when free mini breakfasts will be provided in Maidstone for those arriving in town without a car.
