Hero postman jumps clear of thieves' getaway car
00:00, 17 December 2004
A PLASTIC container was snatched from a postman by two men as he made a collection from a post box outside the Maidstone's main Post Office today.
The two men were seen by witnesses sitting in a silver Mazda-type saloon outside the post office in King Street. They leapt out when the postman arrived.
After grabbing the box, the pair drove off down King Street towards Sittingbourne Road.
The postman attempted to stop the thieves by grabbing hold of the driver through the open car door but was forced to jump clear after being dragged along the road for about 100 yards.
The two men were black and in their 20s. The incident happened at about 8am.
It is believed they escaped with some Post Office internal mail but full details are not yet known.
