Teston bridge closed after vehicle strikes parapet
18:00, 14 August 2017
An historic Kent bridge has been closed to all traffic over fears a large section could fall down.
Highways officials shut Teston bridge outside Maidstone earlier today after a vehicle struck the parapet.
The River Medway has also been closed to all boats as a large section of the crossing is in danger of toppling.
Teston Lane will be closed until Sunday, September 3 and a diversion put in place while the emergency works are carried out.
The alternative route is via Tonbridge Road, Bow Road, Maidstone Road, Hampstead Lane, Benover Road, High Street, Yalding Hill and onto Lower Road.
Teston Bridge is medieval and was widened in 1749.
It was damaged last June after the wall was struck by a vehicle and partially collapsed.
