The magic of Christmas is officially in the air.
Maidstone’s countdown to Christmas has begun following a terrific evening of celebrations ahead of the festive season.
People gathered in Jubilee Square with excitement and anticipation ahead of the town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on – which climaxed with Mayor of Maidstone, Gordon Newton, pushing the red button to turn them on.
kmfm presenters Garry and Chelsea returned to the stage with One Maidstone for an evening of fun and music.
Previous events have drawn in as many as 5,000 people and this year the wet weather certainly didn’t dampening anyone's spirits.
Cllr Newton said: “The atmosphere is unbelievable, and it’s so nice to have a real Christmas tree.
“I look forward to having the family around at Christmas, and cannot wait until we do this again next year.”
A selection of festive performances have been taking place throughout the town centre.
Since 4pm, Elves and Gingerbread Men have appeared at Lockmeadow, The Mall, Fremlin Walk and Royal Star Arcade.
There has been live music and performances on stage in the square from 5pm.
Hazlitt Theatre’s Peter Pan panto cast has been helping the breakfast presenters with the official countdown – which took place at about 7pm.
When asked what her favourite thing about the annual celebration is, Chelsea replied: “It’s about spending time with family and friends, and I love how it brings everyone together and gets everyone happy.
“That’s the thing I love most.
“Stuffing also comes into my head when I think of my favourite things at Christmas.”
A Christmas trail has also launched, with 24 posters dotted around the town centre to discover.
Those who find them could be entered into a prize draw to win £150 worth of shopping vouchers, or VIP panto tickets for next year. It runs until Thursday, January 4.
Squishsmallows, opening stockings, heelys and food are just some of the things youngsters Coco, Ace, George and Mollie are excited about this Christmas.
All four say they are enjoying tonight’s jamboree as they countdown to the lights-on finale soon.
