There are just two weeks to go until Maidstone hosts what is set to be a packed Sport Relief mile.

The Maidstone Mile takes place on Sunday March 21, in Mote Park. More than 500 people have already signed up. It is organised by Maidstone council and is proving so popular, the number of places has increased from 500 to 800.

Maidstone's effort for Sport Relief is actually three different runs and the event is supported by the Kent Messenger.

For those who would like to tackle a manageable and fun distance, the one-mile event, starting at 1.30pm, would be the most suitable. Entrants can run or walk. Families with young children are encouraged to enter, and the route is suitable for children in pushchairs.

Seasoned runners will be in action earlier in the day. A six mile run sets off at 10am and a three-mile run at 12.30pm.

Entry costs £5 to cover the running of the event, and runners can pledge to raise any amount for the charity, which helps vulnerable young people in the UK and abroad.

Cllr Marion Ring (Con), who by her own admission has no history of running, has signed up for the one mile run.

The councillor for Shepway said: "I had to put my money where my mouth is and sign up and take part. The event is for a great cause and I will probably do a mix of walking and running. My daughters, who run, have already put me on a training plan."

KM assistant news editor Rob Bailey and reporter Mary Graham have pledged to tackle the distance for the charity, as are Maidstone council workers Simon Brown and Christina Chemsi (pictured right).

There will also be a number of stalls at Mote Park on the day, including representatives from Run England, Maidstone Leisure Centre, Medway and Maidstone Athletics Club, and the Urban Blue Bus. The cafe and kiosks will also be open.

There is still time to enter at www.sportrelief.com

The Maidstone and District Pool League is also taking part by running a series of events for pool players, on Sunday, March 21.
