General Election: Weald of Kent hustings to take place at St Mildred’s Church in Tenterden on June 23
12:53, 18 June 2024
A general election hustings will be held for the Weald of Kent constituency on June 23 in Tenterden.
It will take place at St Mildred’s Church, Church Road, in the town between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
All five candidates vying to become the next MP for the newly formed constituency are believed to be taking part.
Weald of Kent was formed from existing constituencies to reflect the county’s growing population.
It comprises large chunks of what was Ashford’s rural heartland, Maidstone and Weald, Faversham and Mid Kent and Folkestone and Hythe.
Standing on July 4 are John Howson (Liberal Democrats), Daniel Kersten (Reform UK), Katie Lam (Con), Lenny Rolles (Labour), and Kate Walder (Green Party).
Those wishing to pose questions on June 23 will have to tailor them to be addressed by all the candidates, who will open the debate with a short personal statement.
Although the Conservatives are favourites to win the seat by a comfortable margin, a strong showing by Labour and Reform UK may make it less of a certainty.
Weald of Kent is one of the most rural seats in the south-east where the residents are older, home-owning and well-off.
Pollsters at Electoral Calculus rate Ms Lam as having an 84% chance of winning the seat on just under 48% of the popular vote. Labour is anticipated to secure around 33% of the votes cast with Reform UK on 11%.
Electoral Calculus defines the constituency as being “strong right” with pro-Brexit sympathies.
