Ice skater Brian Tuffney looking for dancing partner

23:01, 26 March 2018

Brian Tuffney loves dancing on ice.

He skates three times a week and has an attic full of medals and trophies.

He'd win a lot more if only he could find a dancing partner.

Mr Tuffney is 82 years old.

He said: "I've been skating all my life. I started at nine and by the time I was 10, I was playing ice hockey for the Harringey Racers.

"Then I turned to dance and I appeared in a number of shows at Wembley."

He even married one of the chorus girls from a Wembley show.

Now single again, after two divorces, Mr Tuffney travels to Planet Ice in Gillingham every Thursday and Friday for a 7am training session with dance coaches Gary and Sharon Jones.

On Tuesday's he's off to the ice rink in Guildford.

He has represented both rinks in skating competitions, but less so recently, because all his former dancing partners have fallen by the wayside.

Last year he had to travel to the Recreational Ice Dance League contest at Guildford as an observer.

He said: "I didn't expect to dance because I didn't have a partner. But the Gosport team had a lady competitor whose partner hadn't turned up and their captain asked if I would partner her.

"Of course the answer was yes - and we won!"

Mr Tuffney, from Northumberland Road, Maidstone, remains busy in other areas. He is still working: he has his own business, B and R Enterprises, installing burglar alarms.

He knows skating has had a beneficial effect on his health.

Last October he was in a road accident on the motorway. He was side-swiped by another car doing 70mph at 5.45am - as he travelled to a skating session as it happens.

He said: "I wasn't seriously hurt, but the movement of my head was restricted and I was having physiotherapy.

"I went skating. Suddenly something in my neck clicked and I was suddenly all right again!"

Mr Tuffney, who drives a BMX Z3 soft-top, said: "Skating is a wonderful hobby. They're such a good crowd.

"There's no back-biting and people are always keen to help each other. Skating is my life."
