Emergency services closed part of Maidstone's one-way system after smoke was spotted coming from a building.
Crews from Kent Police and Kent Fire and Rescue Service were called to Lower Stone Street at around 7.10am today, to reports of a suspected fire at Gala Bingo.
Officers arrived and discovered the smoke was caused by an intruder alarm but no trespassers were found at the site.
Patrols closed one-lane of A229 Bishops Way, up to the junction with Mote Road, while they investigated.
They left the scene at about 8.10am but drivers are still facing heavy congestion as a result of the incident.
