A council has launched an investigation after a mound of rubbish was fly-tipped along a country lane.

The waste was discovered at the end of Butt Green Lane, by the crossroad with Stilebridge Lane in Linton.

Pictures show the pile of dumped rubbish, which mainly consisted of building waste, on the side of the road.

Several pallets, polystyrene, guttering and tarpaulin, as well as a vacuum cleaner and sink were among the discarded items.

Councillor Brian Clark (Lib) discovered the mess at around 7.30am last Wednesday.

He says he has reported similar incidents in the area “several times before”.

“It’s dreadful. It seems to have been done just at the point at which we get to the urban edge of Maidstone,” he explained.

“If somebody's going to do that sort of thing they're going to do it where there aren't any houses.

“Clearly they're looking at saving money over having that professionally disposed of.

“They're literally just getting to the first point at which it's isolated enough to feel that they can get away with it.”

A number of people commented on the pictures that were shared on Facebook.

One person said: “It happens in that same spot weekly if not more often. The road has even been shut on occasions. Scumbags.”

Another added: “So sad to see all that rubbish including people throwing cans/bottles and food wrappings out of their vehicles as they drive down the lanes.

“Why can’t drivers just empty their vehicles when they get home.”

It is understood that the waste was removed from the road on Monday night.

A spokesman from Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) said: “We are conducting an investigation into a large fly-tip that occurred along Butt Green Lane, Boughton Monchelsea.

“This comprised of building materials, commercial and domestic waste.

“The MBC Waste Crime Team attended and recovered evidence which has identified the perpetrator.

“The current level of fine for this offence is a £1,000 Fixed Penalty Notice or, if this is not accepted, the offender may elect to go to court, where, if found guilty, the offence of fly-tipping carries a maximum penalty of £50,000, or up to 12 months imprisonment.”
