Excitement is building in Kent ahead of England's semi final against the USA at the Women's World Cup tonight.

The Lionesses are hoping to reach the final for the first time, but face a daunting task as they prepare to face the World Champions.

But whatever happens the team, managed by Phil Neville, appear to have already succeeded in inspiring girls and young women across Kent to take up the sport - and what can be achieved when you believe in yourself.

Katie Startup, the first team goalkeeper for the Charlton women's team, said: "When you see the national team doing so well it inspires you to keep pushing and train harder and hopefully see yourself there one day."

The 20-year-old Maidstone resident, who has played for England at Under 17s and 19s level, says there are more opportunities for girls to play football now than when she was at primary school.

"It was laughed at and it wasn't really taken seriously because there was no England national team in the spotlight, there was no English club sides in the spotlight," she said.

"I know Arsenal ladies were doing really well at the time but it just wasn't seen in the community."
