A millionaire property tycoon suffered an unfortunate loss this afternoon as two of his race horses competed in the Scottish Grand National.

Fergus Wilson entered Gone Too Far and Father Edward in today's 3.55pm race at Ayr.

Unfortunately, neither horse completed the 27-fence, four-mile course.

The race was in fact won by Vicente, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, who won after a nail-biting conclusion to the race, edging ahead of Cogry, trained by Sam's father Nigel Twiston-Davies, in the final moments.

Mr Wilson, who owns hundreds of buy-to-let properties around Ashford and Maidstone, has these horses trained by David Pipe.

According to stats provided by the Racing Post, Father Edward moved to Mr Pipe's yard last August, and subsequently won its first race since the move at Cartmel, over three miles.

Racing Post notes the eight-year-old horse has been out of form since however, and today it was a rank outsider at 66/1.

Gone Too Far had never raced beyond three miles before today, and pre-race odds put the horse at 80/1 to win.

Sadly the Boughton Monchelsea businessman's horses were amongst 13 that didn't finish the race.

Mr Wilson said: "The two horses today were pulled up three out when it was clear they were not going to win. That is entirely normal in very hot weather.

"Everyone is very conscious after the death of Many Clouds of unnecessary exertion in hot weather."
