A partial lane closure will be enforced in Sittingbourne Road, Maidstone, today (Sunday) to allow the installation of new water meters by South East Water.

It is part of planned works that will see the water supplier create water meters for residents living in Sittinbourne Road, Bearsted Road and Ashford Road.

The lane closure will be enforced near the junction with Claremont Road and Kent Highways has warned drivers to expect delays between 9am and 4pm.

Most of the other work will be carried out on footpaths and it is not thought this will have any impact on pedestrians.

It is part of a larger programme that started last year and has so far seen more than 15,000 metres installed in the town.

Oluseyi Onifade, South East Waters metering manager, said: “This work has been scheduled for the weekend so disruption should be minimal and the work will be carried out as quickly and quietly as possible

“Our metering programme aims to reduce demand for water and is part of our long term plan to manage water supplies.

"Research shows households with a water meter installed use 10 per cent less water than those without.

“We also believe metering is a fairer way for customers to pay for their water because you only pay for the water you use.”
