Firefighters are at the scene of a large barn fire in Crouch Lane, Sandhurst, Cranbrook

10:00, 30 September 2015

Firefighters tackle a huge barn blaze which broke out in Sandhurst yesterday.

Crouch Lane was closed between the A268 Queen Street, Sand Pit Lane and Hopehouse Lane as six crews descended on the scene, just after 11.30am.

The fire is thought to have broken out in hop drying kilns inside the commercial property before spreading to the roof.

Paramedics were called after four men aged between 20 and 65 suffered minor smoke inhalation. All casualties were treated at the scene.

Residents were advised to keep their windows closed due to smoke coming from the building.

Crews used water pumped from a nearby pond to tackle the flames. Firefighters also used breathing apparatus, a hose reel and a fog spike in an attempt to stop the blaze spreading.

At around 4pm attendance was scaled down to two fire engines and a water unit and hose reels were used to damp down remaining hot spots.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service left the scene at 6.25pm - six hours after the blaze broke out.
