The fight is on to stop a waste recycling facility being built in the shadow of an incinerator.

Bosses behind the Allington Incinerator on the 20/20 Business Estate near Maidstone are applying to add a new waste recycling facility, as Kent County Council weighs up its options for a potential site.

Locals in the Orchards development on London Road are concerned about bad odours, noise pollution, increased traffic congestion and consequential reduction in air quality.

Neil Hammond said: "People have moved into the area accepting the incinerator is here, but the industrial estate isn't a suitable pleace for waste recycling plant.

"It's going to be four times larger than Tovil's if approved.

"We're just a few hundred yards from the site, residents are concerned about the noise and traffic that would come with a new facility."

A petition has been launched by members of The Orchards Resident Management Company, so far it has gained around 100 signatures.

Maidstone and The Weald MP Helen Grant said: "I completely understand the worries of local people facing this threat. This proposal is so close to their homes that it will be impossible to mitigate the effects of noise and smells.

"Another location surely can be found that is not right on the doorsteps of a brand-new residential community and I am standing with them to seek that alternative."
