Maidstone United player/manager Jay Saunders wants to break his side’s home duck this weekend when their attempt at the great escape from the Ryman League, Premier Division drop zone continues.

The Stones host in-form Canvey Island at Homelands on Saturday with the worst home record in the league of just five points from a possible 54 this season.

Having won back-to-back games for the first time following last Saturday’s heroics at Tooting, Saunders’ side are seven points from safety with five games left.

Saunders (pictured) said: "The dressing room is a good place to be at the moment."

Canvey have won six of their last eight and their last two away but Saunders added: "We want to get our first home win – that is the reason why we’re down there. We are a good team going forward, I have no concerns about us scoring enough goals.

"Hopefully, we can cut out the mistakes and we’ll be all right. The table is so tight, so as well as we have done in the last couple of weeks, it will all be for nothing if we don’t keep it going. We could still be down in two weeks.

"Canvey are one of the in-form teams but then Tooting had won something like nine on the spin at home.

"Things can change quickly in football and anyone can beat anyone in this division."

Saunders chose to sit out the Tooting win to rest a troublesome groin but plans to return against Canvey, while Simon Glover could also return although Michael Phillips (foot) is a doubt.

Ronayne Marsh-Brown begins a two-match ban while Sean Johnson is suspended for one game.
