A town centre road remains sealed off this morning after a major crash overnight.
Police were pursuing a suspected stolen vehicle when it collided with another car at the foot of Buckland Hill near its junction with St Peter Street in Maidstone.
The road remains taped off this morning, with police on the scene.
The incident happened just before midnight, prompting a major response by the emergency services.
Neighbours say up to 12 police cars and several ambulances were in attendance, with the air ambulance landing in nearby Whatman Park.
The driver of the second vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken to a London hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
The three occupants of the suspected stolen vehicle were treated for minor injuries locally.
A police spokesman said: “At around 11.55pm, officers attempted to stop a suspected stolen Mercedes in Lenham, near Maidstone.
“The vehicle did not stop and it was pursued into Maidstone town centre where it was involved in a collision with another car in St Peter’s Street.
“Three teenage boys, all aged 17, were arrested at the scene.
“An investigation is underway and, as is standard procedure, and the matter will be referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”
The road is on a busy school-run route to Maplesden Noakes and Maidstone Girls Grammar schools.
Its continued closure this morning led to serious traffic congestion throughout the town centre, as motorists sought alternative routes.
