Suspect in court after Maidstone crash involving van which was allegedly stolen

A suspected thief has appeared in court after a crash in Maidstone involving van which was allegedly stolen.

The incident happened at around 5.25pm on Saturday after the theft of a white Peugeot Partner in Bower Place was reported to police.

Officers saw the vehicle turning from Bower Mount Road into London Road, where it drove towards the town centre. The van continued into Terrace Road where it crashed with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Two men were arrested in connection with the incident.

Lenny Devall, of no fixed address, was charged with taking a vehicle without consent, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

The 43-year-old appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. He was remanded to a hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on a date to be confirmed.

A 30-year-old Sheerness man was bailed until Monday, April 12.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses of the crash, or who have seen the van before, to contact them. Motorists with dashcam are also asked to check for footage.
