AN ARTIST'S impression of a young man who died in a road accident has been released by police in the hope that someone may be able to identify him.

The victim, thought to have been aged 15 or 16, died from injuries he received after he was struck by a van on the A249 at Detling, near Maidstone.

He was attempting to cross busy dual carriageway just after midday on Tuesday, February 28, to find food after being dropped off in a layby on the Maidstone bound carriageway by a driver who had given him and another young man a lift.

According to his travelling companion, the two young men had met and made their way from Calais.

The young man who died is believed to have started his journey in the African state of Eritrea. His friend has indicated the young man may have the name Daud, possibly pronounced ‘Da-ood’.

Sgt Julian Barton, from Kent Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said: "We are releasing an artist’s impression showing how this young man would have looked when he was alive because it is possible he was trying to make his way to meet family, a friend or relatives in the UK.

The driver of the van was taken to Maidstone Hospital after the collision and treated for shock.
