SIX new Deputy Lieutenants of Kent have been appointed, each of them honoured for their positive contribution to the county and or the nation.

The six are Roger De Haan, of Folkestone, Elizabeth Fleming, of Edenbridge, Douglas Horner, of Riverhead, near Sevenoaks, Kate Lampard, of Frinsted, near Sittingbourne, Lady Nelson, of Fairseat, near Gravesend, and Brigadier (retired) David Ralls, of Ash, near Canterbury.

Announcing the appointments, the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Allan Willett, who is the Queen’s representative in the county, said: “We warmly welcome these six outstanding personalities to the Lieutenancy.

“They are joining a network of fine men and women whose role it is to support the monarchy, protect its dignity and integrity, and serve the county of Kent by championing and celebrating its history, its communities – and its people.”

The Lieutenancy of Kent consists of the Lord Lieutenant, the Vice Lord Lieutenant, Viscount De L’Isle, and a maximum of 64 other Deputy Lieutenant appointments, about one one per 25,000 people.

The office dates back to 1558 and was originally mainly responsible for the County’s defence and the maintenance of order.

The Lord Lieutenant added: "These new appointments are important because the Lieutenancy is currently evolving to play an increasing role as a potent independent force for good in the County of Kent."
