A council is refusing to share the name of a company it worked with on a cancelled Christmas attraction, saying it is "commercially sensitive".

Maidstone Borough Council worked with an unnamed organiser on the Christmas Ice Park event, which it cancelled in August.

The council issued a statement last week, but has now issued a new one.

It reads: "It is with regret that the Ice Park planned this year has been cancelled.

"The decision was made following requests from the Ice Park Maidstone organiser to the equipment suppliers to personally guarantee the event equipment arriving from Europe.

"Having failed to reach an agreement with the suppliers the decision was made by the organiser to cancel the event for this year and pursue an alternative supplier for a 2020 event.

"Maidstone Borough Council and the Ice Park Maidstone organiser were not willing sign off on this event without the public's interests being guaranteed and due to the lack of time to reinstate an alternative supplier, the decision has been made to cancel this year’s event."

The statement differs from its original release, when the council wrongly claimed an Italian company was seeking a guarantee from the Ice Park's organiser before sending a specialist ice rink for the festive event.

Despite repeated attempts, Maidstone Borough Council has said it will not reveal what company is organising the Ice Park event.

A council spokeswoman said the name of the company was "commercially sensitive".

Maidstone Borough Council is responsible for Mote Park, where the event was due to take place, and its own branding has been on each Ice Park promotion.

Anyone who purchased tickets in advance of the festive attraction have been refunded.

The same council has faced previous calls to be more open with the public over items it claims are "commercially sensitive," including a third party report listing sites which could potentially be put up for sale.
