You Can't Buy Me Love, The Beatles sang. But one member of the iconic band proved you can pay more than £100 in a veggie restaurant on a visit to Maidstone.

The meat-free meal bill was racked up by Sir Paul McCartney at the Fortify Cafe, in High Street, on Monday.

The megastar, who is well-known for his vegetarian diet, was in town to film Later... with Jools Holland at the Maidstone Studios in New Cut Road, Vinters Park.

It is thought Sir Paul was rehearsing for the BBC2 show when he sent a team member to place his lunch order.

Chef Sian Sheridan said it was not until she was halfway through preparing the feast that the female customer admitted it was for the famous musician.

"I really made sure everything was perfect," she said. "I couldn't believe I was making Paul McCartney's lunch.

"It's great for us as he's obviously extremely well known for being a vegetarian.

"I can't say exactly how much he spent, but it was over £100. He ordered a lot, but it was for him and the band. He's welcome back anytime!"

Sir Paul's feast contained 12 sandwiches - including egg mayonnaise, falafel, and roasted peppers with hummus and rocket - the last servings of the eatery's popular two bean stew, brownies, frittatas and a mix of savoury bakes.

The chef said some of the servings were wheat-free.

It is not known if the singer shared his banquet with the other acts performing on the show, such as The Arctic Monkeys, Katy B, and Earth, Wind and Fire.

Sir Paul who released his latest album, called New, last week to critical acclaim.

Later with Jools Holland, broadcast by the BBC and featuring a mix of up-and-coming artists and pop legends, moved into Maidstone Studios from its former Television Centre home in Shepherds Bush last year.

Mr Holland, who lives in Cooling Castle and is a Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, said it time the County Town was a "great location" for the show.
