Residents at the Pilgrims Retreat in Harrietsham have raised thousands for the NHS urgent Covid-19 appeal by clapping on their doorsteps.

While people cheered during the weekly Clap for our Carers campaign, Dave Cross, manager of the retreat's social club, patrolled the site collecting donations dressed as an inflatable turkey, while his wife Sharon went disguised as a Minion.

Mr Cross said he used a littler picker to collect the money to maintain a social distance.

The 57-year-old said: "I told everyone a couple of days before that I'd be doing it, I sent a email out so they had their donations ready in envelopes so it was easier for me to pick up.

"It was great fun, everyone who lives on site has been so generous and it just seemed the right thing to do for the NHS and key workers.

"Everyone has been looking after each other. Most people have been staying in doors because they're over a certain age but it's a real community here. If someone can't go out, others will offer to do some shopping for them so they're keeping their spirits up."

More than £2,500 was raised including a donation from park owner, Fred Sines, of £500.

Mr Cross said this was one of many fundraiser residents at the over 50s retreat on Hogbarn Lane take part in throughout the year.

Although there will be no more dancing characters, the residents will show their appreciation by taking part in the clap again this evening.
