Plans have been put forward to turn a run-down kiosk and toilet block in a popular beauty spot into changing rooms.

The well-known site, near the lake at Mote Park in Maidstone, has “fallen into a state of disrepair” in recent years.

Now proposals to turn it into a storage block and changing rooms – which could cost around £250,000 – have been sent to the local authority.

The kiosk, which hasn’t been used since 2017, is a single-storey, yellow brick building, set back from one of the park’s main walkways and is on the other side of the water from the café and playground.

A design statement with the application explained: “It was historically used as a refreshment kiosk, with public toilets located to the rear.

“The building appears to have been redundant for some time and has fallen into a state of disrepair, with the flat roof having collapsed in some areas.

“Internally, the kiosk appears to have been vandalised, although remnants of its previous use are still visible.”

The proposed extensions would be “modest” and “not have any significant impact on the character or appearance of Mote Park”.

The current state of the building is described as having a “very poor appearance” which “detracts from the historic park”.

Earlier this year, Maidstone council unveiled a new £2.5m cafe at Mote Park.

It is all part of a £4.3m improvement project for the beauty spot.
