Police report drop in domestic burglary

00:00, 17 April 2003

DOMESTIC burglary is on the decrease, according to figures compiled by Maidstone and Malling police.

The figures, compiled for the first quarter of this year, show that burglary crime has reduced by about five per cent from last year.

Police records show that, on average, only two burglaries are dealt with per day in Maidstone and Malling out of 100,000 households in the area. However, incidences of shed and garage burglaries are on the increase.

Crime manager Det Ch Insp Steve Corbishley is urging householders to remain vigilant. He said: "It is very pleasing that our performance with regards to burglary has been extremely successful.

"While this is reassuring news I am concerned to see a rise in shed and garage burglaries. This is unfortunately a typical trend during springtime. However, it is a trend I intend to change.

"I strongly appeal to members of the public to review their own security measures. Look at your shed or garage and ask yourself if you could break in. If you could, a thief could too."

Mr Corbishley advises householders to move items away from windows, or places where they can be seen, and cover them with a blanket. They should be marked with the resident's name and postcode in ultraviolet pen.

An alarm and security equipment, such as good quality locks, should be fitted.

Mr Corbishley said: "While I appreciate that not everyone can afford to buy security equipment some simple, inexpensive activity can be done which will vastly reduce the risk of being a crime victim."

Police are also urging members of the public not to buy second-hand goods from non-reputable sources in case they are stolen.
